How to make a band logo
A band logo has to read as a tiny avatar and as a giant backdrop. Here’s how to make one that works everywhere — in five steps — and export it free.

-
1Decide what the logo has to do
A band logo lives in tiny streaming avatars and on huge backdrops. Before styling, decide whether you want a pure wordmark (just the name) or a badge/crest with an icon and a year. Wordmarks read modern and flexible; badges read classic and collectible.
-
2Pick a typeface that matches your sound
Type carries most of the feeling. Tall condensed caps read bold and modern; worn vintage faces read rock and roots; gothic blackletter reads heavy and metal. Pick one strong typeface and let it lead — avoid mixing two display faces.
-
3Add one icon, or none
If you use an icon, use exactly one — a pick, a star, a bolt, a sound wave — and keep it simple. Many of the best band logos have no icon at all. The icon should add meaning, not decoration.
-
4Limit your colors
Two colors is plenty: one for the name, one accent. A tight palette prints cheaply on merch and reproduces in one ink for stamps and screens. High contrast keeps it readable on posters and thumbnails alike.
-
5Test it small, then export
Shrink the logo to avatar size — if it still reads, it works everywhere. When it’s right, export a vector SVG (scales forever, prints sharp) plus a transparent PNG for socials. Keep the SVG as your master file.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need design software to make a band logo?
No. A browser-based generator lets you type your name, pick a typeface, icon and colors, and export print-ready files — no Illustrator or Photoshop required.
What format should a band logo be in?
Keep a vector SVG as your master — it scales to any size without blurring and is what printers and merch suppliers prefer. Use transparent PNGs for screens, socials and quick placements.
How much does a band logo cost?
You can make and download one free here, including the SVG. Hiring a designer typically runs from tens to hundreds of dollars; a generator is a fast, free way to get a usable mark or to prototype before commissioning.
Can I trademark a band logo I generate?
A generated logo is not automatically a trademark. If you want exclusive rights, consult a trademark attorney and search existing marks first. This guide and tool are not legal advice.
